Stationmaster Cat

I saw this story and thought it was really cute. Apparently the president of the Wakayama railway named a cat to be stationmaster of a previously unmanned train station in Kishigawa, Japan.

Tama the cat, who belongs to a shopkeeper at the station, has drawn so many visitors that he has been promoted to division chief and has earned a lot of media attention. He's even been given an assistant. His owner sells Tama souvenirs at his shop. Tama is given free meals as payment for his services.

That is either the silliest and cutest thing I've seen in a long time, or probably one of the most brilliant methods to encourage tourism I've seen in a long time.

You have to admit, there are only the Japanese to be able to come up with something like this.

Now if only I could actually understand those videos.

Tama is probably now too popular for this to happen, but can you imagine one unsatisfied "customer" I guess, getting worked up and demands to "see the stationmaster." Can you imagine that person being brought to a cat?
