Sage had fallen asleep

"Wow! Wait until I tell Grandma! I'll bet she wants to meet you!"
Franklen grew very excited.
"Umm...were you guys going to rest here tonight?"
He pointed to Sage, who was snoozing under a bush.

"Pretty much. Unless you know a better place nearby?" Nathan said gesturing to his lil tend which definitely wouldn't fit three mice comfortably.

Franklen looked around at the surroundings and shrugged.
"No, I've never been this far from the farm before. We should move under the bushes before dark though." He trembled slightly. "I don't think there's cats out here but there might be owls." He looked up at the sky nervously.

"Yeah. I was thinking we could maybe move in that notch in the tree over there. It's big enough for us all and I don't think anything lives there." Nathan said pointing to it.

Franklen looked where Nathan was pointing and nodded.
"Okay, lets wake him up and then we'll go." He shook Sage awake.

"Come on Sage wake up. We're making a better camp for the night." Nathan said packing the stuff up and lighting a small lamp and then putting out the fire.

He wakes up

Franklen led the way up the tree, being an expert climber from his life on the farm. When he got to the notch he checked carefully for any sign of danger.

"So is it empty?" Nathan asked looking in and listening. A mouse from Nimh knew the value of being able to listen well.

Sage has trouble climbing the tree.

"I think so." Franklen replied checking the notch carefully. He saw a few dried leaves gathered into a nest, but no sign of any creature. Turning around he lowered a branch to Sage to help him climb up.

(Um. I said notch in a tree. I should have been more specific. I mean down near the ground. Oh well I'll play along. Although I'm pretty sure I did mention it was at root level.)

Nathan Reached down and helped sage up into the notch. "Well this should do for the night. I'd guess a wood pecker made this. Doesn't look like it's been used in a while though." Nathan said looking around.

Franklen settled down into the leaves and took some dinner from his pack.
"So, Sage. Where are you from and where are you going?"

Poco shared his food out with the others.
"My mother packed this for my trip. She always gives me too much though."

Sage sighs "I'm from a old, abandoned barn a town ova... My pawents were eaten by a stway cat but I got away... As for where I'm headed, nowhere really. I'm pretty much traveling with Nathan now."

"Yeah. He can stay with me in Thorn Valley." Nathan said smiling. "Once we get there I plan to right a letter to your Grandma. I wanna get to know her if she new Johnathan. He was a really nice mouse. Heck he was my shoulder to cry on a a few times while we were still at Nimh." N

Franklen looks a little sad. "I never knew my Grandpa. He died when my mom was still a kid. Grandma said he was really smart and brave. It's because of him that we're all smart too." He looks down self-consiously. "Smarter than normal I mean."

Sage had fallen sleep, leaned into Nathan with his thumb in his mouth.

"Yeah. Your grandpa was a brave a smart mouse. He didn't have all the book smarts that say Mr. Ages has but he had practical smarts too. He knew how to read people and know just what to do or say to inspire them. I kinda miss him. Heck I don't even know how he died. Your lucky Franklen. I can't remember my parents or grandparents at all. Nimh's about as far back as I can remember." Nathan said looking down himself while stroking Link's hair.

Sage begins to murrs, nuzzling into Nathan's hand.

"I'm not really sure how he died either. Momma said he was helping the rats but wouldn't tell me more. I guess I'm too little..." He looks sad and upset.

"Well at least ya know he died helping someone. So it was a good death. I can't wait to see Mr. Ages and the others at thorn Valley. It'll feel nice to be able to call a place home." Nathan said as he continued to pet Link.

Sage keeps on murring. He curls into Nathan for warmth.

Franklen looks at Sage for a moment. "I guess we should sleep too. But..."
He seems about to say something but then stops and looks away.
