"But what? Want somebody to keep watch? Bad dreams? Damp diapee?" Nathan asked looking at Franklen curiously.

"Well...I've never been away from home before...and I... wet the bed..."
He said the last part very quietly and looked away again.

"Ah thats no problem. Have ya not noticed the white and blue garments I've been wearing? I can't control when I go at all." Nathon said pointing to his diaper and plastic pants. "I can let ya use a pair for tonight if ya want. It'll keep your sleeping area dry."

Sage whimpers in his sleep.

Franklen smiled with relief and petted Sage's head to calm him. "Thank you, Nathan. I think maybe I should do that." He settled down to sleep close to the others. "Good night, if we get up early I think we could make it there tomorrow."

"Otay. Good night." Nathon said laying down himself and snuggling sage.

Sage murrs, dreaming about his family

Franklen sleeps restlessly, not being used to being away from his family. Finally he awakens at daybreak and moves to the edge of the notch to watch the sunrise.

Nathan yawn and sits up seeing Franklen looking out the notch. He gets up slowly careful not to wake Sage and walks over and sits down next to him. "You ok?"

Franklen turns, startled. "Yeah, I'm okay. I'm just anxious to get started." He gets up and opens his pack, sharing out some breakfast. "It's funny Nathan, mama said there weren't any mice like us left. You know, from NIMH. How many of you are there? And do you marry normal mice too?"

"Well I honestly don't know. I know there were six mice that didn't make it out of Nimh the first time. They were called the lost six. But there were others that went behind them. I was in that group we got out but where scattered. I don't know where any of the others are. But I heard that the Nimh building got shut down a while back and those six got rescued by the rats." Nathon said accepting the offered food.

Sage whimpers in his sleep, muttering "M-mommy..."

"Looks like your not the only one missing your family Franklen." Nathan said sitting down next to sage and holding him. "Shhhhhh. It's ok."

"Wow...so there could be lots of families like mine out there." Franklen sat in silence for a while, his paw on Sage's head to comfort him.

"Yep. It's possible. Just think. Lots of families with our kind of smarts. Imagen it. I think we'd eventually out pass those brutish humans." Nathan said cuddling Sage.

Sage murrs calming down as he rests his head on Nathan's shoulder

"Maybe." Franklen thinks back to all the meals he's had at the farmer's expense. "But we may want to keep them around anyway." He finishes eating.

"Yeah. I'm not saying get rid of em. Just maybe teach em to respect nature a lil bit more. People like the farmer you lived by are good in that department. But there are other humans that aren't so nice. Like those scientist at Nimh." Nathan said thinking back to then.

"Were they bad?" Franklen's eyes got wide. "All I know is they made us smart. Grandma said they held you prisoner though."

"They caputed us off the streets and held us in cages. They experimented on us. It did make us smart but the transformation wasn't exactly a smooth and pleasant one. It was more pain then I've ever felt in my life. I guess in a way I owe them my smarts but I can't forgive them for the pain they put us through. Even after the Transformation. They kept testing on us. Mazes with electic floor panels scattered here and there. It was horrible. You never new what they'd do next." Nathan said shaking a bit remembering those events.

Sage sucks his thumb as he slept.

"I'm sorry. I'm glad they're gone now. Even if it means there won't be more of us." Franklen looks shaken up.

"Oh there'll be more of us. A lot of the rats in thorn valley have kids. Our smarts are passed along to our decedents. Your a third generation only a quarter Nimh mouse yet your just a smart a s first generation. No matter what that intelligence gene gets past on." Nathan said calming down.

Sage stirs a lil

"Speaking of the rats, we should go soon or we won't make it before dark." Franklen stood up and dusted the breakfast crumbs from his shirt.
